Take Me Out to the Ball Game !!
It’s that wonderful time of year when Sarasota turns to one of its favorite sports - baseball. The Sarasota Spring Training Baseball season fired up on February 26th and will run through March 30th this year. Teams like the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, and the Philadelphia Phillies will be here competing against our home team, the Baltimore Orioles. You can view the entire season line up at Orioles Schedule.
Thanks to our beautiful weather, spring training baseball has been a fixture in Sarasota for nearly a century. The annual tradition of hosting Major League teams in Sarasota began in the 1920’s when the owner of the New York Giants was persuaded by two good friends, Samuel Gumpertz and John Ringling to bring his team to play at a newly constructed baseball diamond in Payne Park. Over the years, the Indianapolis Indians, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Chicago White Sox all played at Payne Park.
In 1989, Sarasota made a significant investment in its sporting venues when the Ed Smith Stadium was built at 2700 12th Street at the corner of 12th and Tuttle in the northeastern part of Downtown Sarasota. And, since 2010, the Baltimore Orioles have called Sarasota their spring training home and more than 640,000 fans have enjoyed spring training games at the stadium. A major renovation to support the needs of the Orioles was completed in 2011.
Ed Smith Stadium is a great place for baseball enthusiasts. Unlike some spring training camps, there's plenty of parking right at the stadium, lots of concession stands, an on-site team shop, and, for those so inclined, there are three private air-conditioned suites can be purchased. If you like getting "up close and personal" with the players, you'll love this stadium with its modest seating capacity of 7,428 plus standing-room-only space bringing the total capacity to 8,500 fans. A fabric sun- shade system extends from the stadium's original roof to nearly double the number of seats in the shade. While tickets have been on sale since January, tickets can often be purchased on the day of the game as well.
If you aren’t a baseball aficionado, the Sarasota area offers several other places to enjoy your favorite sport or sports including the Sarasota Polo Club, the IMG Sports Academy and the Nathan Benderson Park among others. Nathan Benderson Park, as an example, will host the 2017 World Rowing Championships. In addition, there are those 35 miles of beaches, and miles of nature and hiking for enjoying swimming, hiking, cycling, equestrian events, boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing and, of course watching sunsets over the Gulf.
