Record Number of Dolphin Babies Born in Sarasota Bay Area
According to a Staff Report article in today’s Sarasota Herald-Tribune, scientists have documented 19 dolphin births this year in Sarasota.
Nineteen bottlenose dolphin calves have been documented during this year’s calving season by the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, part of the Chicago Zoological Society in collaboration with Mote Marine Laboratory, according to a Mote news release. Calving season peaks during late spring and summer. The 19 calves join up to five generations of long-term resident dolphins in the Sarasota Bay area.
SDRP has been researching the local dolphins since 1970, making it the world’s longest-running study of a wild dolphin population.
