History of St. Armands Real Estate
A Frenchman, Charles St. Armands, bought property on the island in 1893. His name was misspelled as St Armands in the original deeds and this misspelled name is still used today. He fished the waters of Sarasota Bay and the Gulf and raised produce which he brought by boat to sell at the Sarasota City Pier.
St. Armands Homes For Sale: The Vision
In 1917, wealthy circus magnate, John Ringling purchased all of St. Armands Key, Bird Key and Lido Key planning to develop it into a small metropolis composed of fine homes, a golf course, a shopping circle and a five star hotel.
Work began in 1923. Streets were laid out, sidewalks poured and the circle was formed in the middle of the island. Statuary from Italy was placed along streets and the entire area tropically landscaped. Ringling used a paddlewheel steamboat as a work boat and to bring prospective buyers to the island. Work began to build the causeway joining St. Armands to mainland Sarasota.
St. Armands Key: Property Development
It is said that St. Armands real estate sales exceeded a million dollars the first day Ringling opened the bridge to the island. In 1927, Ringling gave the causeway to the city. The 1929 stock market crash led to the Great Depression, the Ringling Causeway was closed for lack of money to maintain it and the deserted island became covered in weeds.
During the 1940's and '50's a few people invested in businesses on St Armands, but it wasn't until the 1960's that the island re-awakened and the causeway and drawbridge to the mainland rebuilt. The drawbridge, which caused traffic jams when opened, was replaced with the span you see today in 2003. Today, St Armands is easily accessible from downtown Sarasota via the John Ringling causeway and bridge.
