Sunset on the Bay Sarasota

Make plans to celebrate a Sarasota Sunset on the Bay welcoming guests from the World Rowing Championships and visitors from around the world. The free event will take place on the Van Wezel bayside lawn and will welcome Yesterdayze and the West Coast Black Theatre Troupe to the outdoor stage on Saturday, September 30, 2017, from 4PM-8PM.

This is the first public event that the Sarasota Bayfront Planning Organization (SBPO), the non-profit organization behind ‘The Bay Project’, has announced. The free public event is designed to engage the community in imagining the possibilities along Sarasota’s Bayfront.

International rowers have been arriving in Sarasota-Manatee as organizers work to finish preparations for the World Rowing Championships. Delays occurred because of Hurricane Irma, but the event is on schedule to begin Saturday, September 23 with an Olympic-style Opening Ceremony at Nathan Benderson Park. Competition begins Sunday, September 24, and the event runs through October 1. Thousands of spectators are expected at the event to watch 1,700 athletes from more than 60 countries. Aside from the races themselves, the 2017 World Rowing Championships will be a celebration of the sport itself.

We are thankful that Hurricane Irma has passed, and I hope you and your loved ones are safe in the aftermath of the storm. Sarasota has dodged another one of Mother Nature’s bullets – can the ancient legends be correct? In the midst of Hurricane Irma, the significance of Monday, September 11 was almost washed away. It was difficult to focus on anything but the storm that was right in front of us. But being evacuated, power outages and concern for our homes and loved ones did not change the fact that 9/11 deserved appropriate recognition. So today we remember the events of that day, the shocking loss we endured and the way this tragedy pulled us together as a nation.
