sarasota senior lifestylesMembers of the Baby Boomer generation have started turning 65 and many of them now have the opportunity to make a really important decision.  Those getting close to retirement may also want to consider making this decision now rather than waiting.

In 2012, there were over 43 million people over the age of 65 in the United States.  In 2015, virtually every day almost 10,000 people reach the point in their lives when they are ready to consider retiring. On a national basis, this demographic change has many implications, but on a more personal level, couples approaching retirement might want to have a discussion that will start with something like this;  “Now that we’re free of the needs of our careers, where do we want to spend our retirement years ?

For the first 9 months of 2015 home and condo sale in the Sarasota and Manatee County market have run at a near-record pace.  But, as we entered the Fall season, Sarasota real estate sales slowed slightly as expected. In the latest month reported, overall property sales in September were 1,608 with 927 in Sarasota County and 681 in Manatee County.   Sarasota County home and condo closings fell a bit after six straight months of over 1,000 sales per month.   Association President Stafford Starcher said, “The local real estate market has finally taken a breather after months and months of near-record sales but overall, property sales numbers for the year to date have been very strong, in fact, stronger than we've seen in a number of years.”

Ask any native of Sarasota where the most desirable properties in Sarasota are and you will very likely be told "West of the Trail."

The group of "West of the Trail" (The “Trail” is the Tamiami Trail aka U.S. Rte 41) neighborhoods lie on the west (or bay front) side of South Tamiami Trail. The area is bounded generally by Mound Street on the north and by Bay Road on the south.  Many of these serene and charming neighborhoods sit under canopies of 100-year old banyon trees.

Home buyers who typically buy a home in one of the "West of the Trail" neighborhoods are generally those who are seeking more than one of the following attributes:

  • Homes with historic significance
  • Excellent schools within walking distance
  • Proximity to excellent health
