The Sarasota-Manatee area has been recognized by the National Civic League with an All-America City Award at a conference here.

Begun in 1949, the All-America City Awards recognize efforts that bring together different sections of a community to tackle pressing issues. The award is given to 10 communities each year, ranging from major cities and regions to towns, villages, counties, neighborhoods and tribes.

This year, the awards focused on communities engaged in the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, which is being implemented in more than 300 regions and more than 40 states across the country. That campaign works to increase the number of students who are reading at or above grade-level by the end of third grade.

According to an article by John Hielscher, staff writer for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, home sales perked up again in Southwest Florida last month, as more owners have decided to put their properties on the market.

Buyers closed on 2,702 existing single-family homes and condominiums in May in Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties, 149 more than the year before, according to data released Wednesday by the Florida Realtors trade group.

That 5.8 percent increase followed a modest sales slump during April, as the region marked the end of the peak buying-and-selling season.

Siesta Key Breeze

The long-awaited Siesta Key, FL trolley, nicknamed Siesta Breeze, recently made its debut in March of 2017 and is now one of the best ways to get around the island since it is totally free!

With traffic and parking often being challenging on Siesta Key, the free trolley is expected to lower congestion while improving the walkability of the entire island.

The launch of the trolley is part of an effort from local leaders to get more people to use public transportation on Siesta Key. The previous Route 10 bus service that the trolley replaced had a relatively low number of riders, with many preferring other modes of transportation.

The trolley runs from 8:00 a.m. to midnight with 20-minute service during the peak hours of

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted a 45 percent chance of the hurricane season that begins June 1 being above normal, a 35 percent chance of a normal season and a 20 percent chance of a below normal season. An average season is 12 named storms, six hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.

Hurricane season officially starts Thursday. Are you ready? Do you have enough water and non-perishable food to last three days to a week? Do you have a flashlight, batteries and radio?

Florida had a nice long run of 11 years without a hurricane making landfall. Our luck ran out last year when Hurricane Hermine hit the Panhandle in September and Hurricane Matthew swept across the east coast in October.

In the days and hours before the

If arts and cultural experiences are important components of your lifestyle, there isn't a better place to live than Sarasota Florida. Sarasota, Florida, named the "#1 Small City in the Nation for the Arts," is the center of Florida’s arts and cultural scene. Sarasota, with its performing arts theatres, the Sarasota Opera, the Sarasota Ballet, the Sarasota Orchestra and too many art galleries and museums to mention rivals the arts environments of many of the biggest cities in the United States.

The genesis of the arts in Sarasota began with John and Mable Ringling when, in 19 24, their first Sarasota project was construction of their magnificent 56-room Venetian Gothic mansion, the Cà d’Zan. The Ringlings collected a significant number of

The 1st quarter of 2017 saw the Greater Sarasota Florida real estate market continue its march closer and closer to a balanced market where the interests of buyers and sellers are in balance meaning neither buyers nor sellers have an advantage.  This follows the period in 2014 and 2015, when a low inventory of available properties meant buyers faced what some called a frenzy of competing multiple offers frequently above the asking price.

But, things have changed in a positive way as 2016 ended and during first quarter of 2017. In Sarasota County, the inventory of available properties has risen to 5,135 up 15.7% over a year ago. In Manatee County the inventory of available properties rose to 3,397, up slightly over 8% from this point last year.

San marco

In Sarasota, reasonably-priced, recently built condos with outstanding amenities and an attractive location can be a bit difficult to find.

But, the condominium residences at San Marco offer something quite unique; reasonably priced yet spacious residences, definitely upscale facilities and amenities and a convenient location. One of the newer residential developments in the Sarasota art district neighborhood, the building’s exterior is reminiscent of its architectural namesake in Venice, Italy, the Piazza San Marco. Your first impression is of its graceful arches and balustrades enhanced by very comfortable interior walkways lined with plant boxes overflowing with shrubs and greenery.
